Beyond 1 Million Connected Devices

How we load-tested ThingSphere past a million devices connected at the same time over MQTT.

With the advent and growth of IoT-enabled devices, a new frontier in the scalability of software and hardware systems emerged. We have all seen IoT platforms perform poorly once a huge number of devices connect at the same time. At ThingSphere, our obsession with infinity makes us push the system to its limits: not just the stack, but the hardware, the operating system and the limits it places on network throughput.

Take a step back to look at the number for a moment: over one million simultaneously connected devices. That is around half the total number of vehicles in the city of London. Singapore has just under a million automobiles, if you put together all private cars, public transport and goods vehicles.

A lot of how-to articles mention breaching the million mark, but most of them let us down: they only achieved a number of maintained connections, without performing any significant data transfer.

The full piece is the rig, the traffic model and the result: 1.536 million concurrent connections across six brokers.
