How this site is made.

What the Labs site is built from, how heavy it is, and the rules it keeps.

The field
One WebGL2 program draws 30,000 points on a laptop and 16,000 on a phone. No 3D library at runtime. Every point has a place it came from and a place it is going; the vertex shader does the rest. The field holds its form while you read, loosens as you scroll, and the scroll itself carries it from one section to the next. Every dot has a counterpart in the next shape, matched along a space-filling curve, so one shape becomes the next rather than scattering. Where you stop, it gathers, and a survey line passes over the world once.
The forms
Each world is generated in code from its real shape: runways and stands, three lines of machines, berths and cranes, a quality line, a globe of devices. What moves in life moves here: aircraft taxi, land and climb out, machines publish to the mesh, the monitor sweeps, devices report. The red points are the ones that need a person. Posters are stippled into dots before they resolve into footage.
Type
Funnel Display and Funnel Sans carry the human voice. Departure Mono, set at multiples of 11 px so its pixels stay whole, carries the machine voice: topics, callouts, figures, the readout in the header.
Weight
All script and styles together are about 80 KB compressed, GSAP included. Measured on the production build on 8 October 2026: the headline paints in about 100 ms, layout shift 0.003, no long tasks, 61 frames a second while a world re-forms.
Rules
Every number is a real number with a source. Clients are named by sector unless they have said otherwise. Red means a person is needed, and nothing else. The site follows your system's light or dark setting, and the dots change material with it. With reduced motion on, worlds appear in place and nothing auto-rotates. Without WebGL, the cards keep a still pattern and the films play directly.
Build
Astro, Tailwind and GSAP, built inside a container every time, so no toolchain lives on anyone's laptop. Content is Markdown in the repository; publishing is a commit. The co-build form posts to a service with no dependencies that keeps every brief before it sends it on.

Departure Mono is by Helena Zhang and Tobias Fried, under the SIL Open Font License. Funnel Display and Funnel Sans are served from Fontsource. Solace is a trademark of Solace Corporation.
